ARVA - In the village of Arva, a new business has taken root, bringing a modern touch to a Victorian building. The Floor Co., owned by husband-and-wife team Justin and Lindsey Monk, opened its doors in November 2024, promising a unique blend of style and service in the flooring industry.
Located in a beautifully preserved 19th-century house at 21556 Richmond St., the store combines the charm of old architecture with the demands of modern consumers. “When you enter, it’s a different world,” Justin Monk describes, highlighting how they have maintained the building’s historical integrity while infusing contemporary design elements.
With over two decades of experience in flooring, Justin’s journey from a tile installer to a business owner encapsulates a deep-rooted passion and expertise. “I’ve been in the flooring industry for over 20 years now,” he shares. His extensive experience is not just in installation but also in understanding customer needs—a critical asset for their retail venture.
The decision to open The Floor Co. was driven by the desire to offer both materials and installation services under one roof. “Most of the time, contractors and builders, they want to have a physical location, like a store they can send customers to for their selections,” Justin explains. This insight into contractor needs and customer preferences has shaped their business model, focusing on a boutique experience rather than a large-scale retail environment.
Operating from Monday to Friday, with Saturdays by appointment, the store aims to cater to a diverse client base. Their services extend throughout Middlesex County, with a prominent presence in areas such as Middlesex Centre and Strathroy-Caradoc, with residential and commercial projects.
Lindsey, who also works in real estate, brings a complementary skill set to the business. “Working together has been great,” she says, emphasizing the synergy between their roles. Her experience in customer service and real estate offers additional value to their clients, intertwining property aesthetics with functional flooring solutions.
Despite the challenges of starting a new business, including the need for effective marketing and community engagement, The Floor Co. is gradually establishing its footprint.
Justin reflects on the strategic choice of location and the potential for growth in Arva, noting the development plans for the area. “Arva is an awesome location…and it’s going to grow a lot,” he predicts, optimistic about the future as the region expands.
As they navigate their first year at the new location, The Floor Co. exemplifies the resilience and entrepreneurial drive of Justin and Lindsey Monk. They are not merely selling floors; they are creating a foundation for community and customer engagement in the heart of Arva.
