MIDDLESEX COUNTY - What drives a community to thrive in the face of growing economic and social challenges? The London Community Foundation (LCF) may provide the answer. LCF is dedicated to nurturing community well-being and development in the London and Middlesex areas through effective philanthropy. By mobilizing local resources and fostering partnerships, LCF aims to fuel sustainable development and address the critical needs of the community across Middlesex County.
Murray Faulkner, a member of the Foundation’s Donor Development Committee and former Chief of Police, likens the foundation’s impact to a “pension plan” for the community. He explains, “Most of our funds are endowed, which means they are invested, and the interest made on the investment is then turned around and handed back out. We handed out over $4 million last year.”
During my interview with LCF representatives, Diane Silva, President and CEO, underscored the foundation’s dedication to adapting to the county’s needs through data-driven initiatives. “As a foundation, we conduct a community checkup report, known as vital signs, which collects data from across the city and the county,” Silva notes. This data has highlighted a surprising trend: the cost of living in rural settings, presumed to be more affordable, is escalating, sometimes surpassing urban areas.
LCF isn’t just about giving grants; it’s about making a lasting impact. They have established a Social Impact Fund, as Silva describes, “We carved out a portion of our assets to invest in deeply affordable to affordable housing, as well as entrepreneurs that have a social lens to their business.” This strategic funding approach not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters long-term community growth.
As Middlesex County evolves, the importance of increasing awareness and engagement among its residents cannot be overstated. The county’s growth brings new challenges and opportunities for philanthropy to play a transformative role. Silva and Faulkner both highlighted the critical need for strategic investment in the community, which will ensure a robust and sustainable future for the county’s residents.
Through its comprehensive approach to philanthropy, LCF is setting a standard for how foundations can influence regional development, making it an essential player in the future of Middlesex County.
As a public foundation, LCF manages charitable funds contributed by individuals, families, and businesses to create a lasting impact. This community foundation continues to adapt and respond to the changing needs of the area, and its efforts will likely shape the region’s trajectory for decades to come, ensuring a thriving, resilient community.
