AILSA CRAIG - In a world of screens and busy schedules, the simple joy of sitting down with a good book — and talking about it with others — can be surprisingly meaningful. That’s exactly what happens once a month at the Ailsa Craig Library.
The Ailsa Craig Book Club meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the local library branch (147 Main St). The group reads a different title each month, chosen from Middlesex County Library’s collection of book club kits, and gathers to discuss it over light refreshments and warm conversation.
The club is open to everyone. Newcomers are always welcome, and no registration is required.
“We read a different book every month, and then we discuss it and have some drinks, snacks, and a visit,” says Krista, a library staff member who facilitates the group. “Even when we don’t all necessarily love the book, we always have a really fun discussion. It’s a great community event that gets people out and chatting.”
The group typically includes six to eight members, and while some participants have been attending for years, new faces are joining too. In April, the group welcomed Marilyn, a newcomer from Parkhill who immediately connected with the club.
The book of the month was The Bear by Andrew Krivak, a haunting, post-apocalyptic fable about a father and daughter living as the last two humans on Earth. The novel unfolds slowly, revealing deep themes of grief, solitude, and survival — all set within the rhythms of the natural world.
The club’s discussions regularly go beyond books, touching on personal history, shared experiences, and broader social themes. While books like The Bear bring new perspectives, they also bring people together.
“That’s the fun of a book club,” one reader added. “I wouldn’t have picked this book myself, but I’m glad I read it — and even more glad to hear everyone else’s take on it.”
The Ailsa Craig Library, part of the Middlesex County Library system, offers a full range of public services — from books and digital resources to computer access, printing, and programs for all ages. The branch also plays an important role in community life, offering a place to learn, connect, and feel at home.
Whether you are an avid reader, a curious beginner, or simply looking for conversation and connection, the Ailsa Craig Book Club offers a warm seat at the table.
