KOMOKA - Permanent speed bumps are being placed in front of Parkview Public School in Komoka. That’s among the traffic control measures endorsed by Middlesex Centre council at its April 10th meeting. The measures were outlined in a report to council by municipal staff.
There will be three speed bumps placed along Oxbow Drive from Valleyview Drive to Delaware Street North. “This is a higher volume secondary road that would benefit from a permanent installation. Temporary speed cushions have been used in the past, but due to the number of heavy trucks using the road they are no longer a viable solution,” Transportation Manager Andrew Giesen told council.
The speed bumps are part of the 2025 Vision Zero Campaign. “The principles of Vision Zero are the elimination of fatal and serious vehicle collisions on municipal roadways,” said Giesen.
Vision Zero began in 2020, and is based on three what Giesen described as “the three e’s”; engineering, education and enforcement. This year’s campaign features nine areas for taking action including Respect the Limit lawn signs, radar display boards, and centre line markers. There’s also a commitment to working with Middlesex County regarding speeding and safety concerns along county roads.
Council was told the location of traffic calming installations was based on public feedback, speed radar results, and the proximity to higher volume pedestrian areas such as schools and parks. “The majority of the proposed traffic installations are located in community safety zones where the posted speed limit is 40 kilometers an hour,” Giesen told council.
Mayor Aina DeViet commended staff on the report, acknowledging that meeting traffic safety needs is a process. “We can’t do this all right away,” said DeViet.
Funds for the Vision Zero operating budget of $25,000 will be used to pay for the permanent speed cushions on Oxbow Drive.
