GLENCOE - Recently, Canadians have been energized to proudly and visibly demonstrate their patriotism for this beautiful and much respected country.
For over 40 years, the Glencoe District Lions Club (GDLC) has been promoting patriotism with our Canada Day Flag Project.
This service project is meant to instill pride in the true, north, strong and free. The GDLC encourages all students, within the 3 Southwest Middlesex elementary schools, to submit a one-page response to “Why you want to fly our flag in your yard.”
Many unique and heartwarming replies are received. And from these many submissions, one recipient, from each of the 3 schools, is chosen to receive an 18 foot flag pole (installed by Lions) and a 36” by 72” flag.
Prior to July 1, Lions install the flag pole. On the morning of Canada Day, each recipient and their invited guests are encouraged to participate in the ceremonial raising of our national symbol. As the student hoists our flag aloft, all present join in the singing of ‘O Canada.’
Committee members, Lions Rudy Huver and Dave Gerber, along with former Lion John DiCesare, have diligently been promoting this service project. Fittingly, Dutch-born Lion Rudy adds a unique touch to the original orange juice toast to Canada - Lion Rudy serves maple leaf shaped and maple flavoured cookies to accompany the toast.
Happy Canada Day!
