STRATHROY — Local officials, first responders, and community members gathered for the official opening of the new Strathroy-Caradoc Fire Station No. 1 on December 1.
Fire trucks were positioned at the entrance of the modern two-storey facility as attendees arrived, with members of council, provincial and federal representatives, and dozens of firefighters present. The ceremony included a traditional “push-in” of a fire engine, a symbolic gesture honouring the historic practice of manually rolling fire apparatus into their bays.
Among the dignitaries attending were MPP Steve Pinsonneault, MP Lianne Rood, members of the Strathroy-Caradoc council, Middlesex County’s 2025 Warden Brian Ropp, and Fire Chief Stephen Beasley. The event also included certificate presentations recognizing the station’s opening.
During remarks, MP Lianne Rood expressed her appreciation for the work of local firefighters and the families who support them. “Thank you for your courage, professionalism, and thanks to your families who share the sacrifices that you make every day for our community,” she said. Rood added that she would “keep advocating for mental health supports” for first responders, emphasizing, “You do deserve that.” She also congratulated municipal leaders for “help[ing] make history a reality.”
Mayor Colin Grantham acknowledged the efforts of both current and long-serving councillors in bringing the project to completion. “Walking in today, I saw two long-term councillors… Councillor Pelkman and Councillor Brennan have been pressing upon me, indeed, for long-term planning,” he said, noting that the station reflects “perseverance on their part.” Grantham also thanked municipal staff for supporting the project, including the finance department.
He highlighted the commitment of volunteer firefighters, especially during the busy holiday season. “It means you are volunteers. You give of yourself selflessly to community,” he said, adding that while families gather for Christmas dinners, firefighters may still be called to duty. “This building is for the community […] with the needs for our firefighters,” he said in his welcome to the new station.
Following speeches, municipal representatives and guests gathered inside the apparatus bay to cut the ceremonial ribbon, marking the official opening of the station. The event concluded with a tour of the facility and an opportunity for residents and officials to view the station’s equipment and design up close.
