The fight to save one of the world’s most iconic species has found a powerful ally in Strathroy.
Through the leadership of Chris Das, a member of the Rotary Club of Strathroy, a major international fundraising campaign has successfully secured over $100,000 to protect endangered rhinos in South Africa.
South Africa currently holds the majority of the world’s white and black rhinoceros populations.
However, these animals face a dire threat from organized poaching syndicates. In 2024, over 300 rhinos were poached across the country. As state properties face increasing pressure, privately owned reserves like the Welgevonden Game Reserve and Lapalala Wilderness Nature Reserve have become critical last stands for the species.
The project, is a collaborative effort between the Rotary Club of Strathroy, South African Rotary clubs, and local conservation experts. Das, a member of the Strathroy club, has been instrumental in leading the fundraising and providing project management oversight to ensure these funds reach the front lines.
The $100,000 investment will support a multi-pronged approach to conservation:

Advanced Technology: Deployment of AI-powered cameras to monitor for human intruders and drones with specialized pilot training and field-charging capabilities to track movements and pursuit threats.

Ranger Support: Funding for K-9 units, specialized leadership training, and a wellness program for the field rangers who risk their lives to protect the reserves.

Community Awareness: Educational initiatives to engage local youth in conservation.

Scientific Research: Critical research into rhino nutrition to help rescued rhinos adapt and breed successfully in new environments.

By combining high-tech surveillance with community education and ranger support, the project aims to create a sustainable “safe haven” where rhinos can live without the constant threat of poaching. This local initiative from Strathroy is proving that community action can have a
profound impact on global environmental preservation.
