Julia looked sternly at her husband, seated at the kitchen table.
“Mark…I don’t care what that woman tells you…She’s a schemer!”
“You think so??”
“I do.”
“Scheming to accomplish…what?”
“Honey, you are so naïve! Some women take a liking to another woman’s husband, and then…They go after them.”
Mark considered this. “You really think so, Julia, honey?”
“Yes, I do, Mark. And they work hard on their little project. I heard of a woman whose hubby was lured away by another woman in the neighbourhood. Before he knew it, he was helping her in the garden, in the house on repairs, and soon enough…she got him where she wanted him.”
“And where was that?”
Julia looked at her stupid sweetheart. “Jesus, Joseph, and Mary! Can you be that thick, Mark?”
“Hunh?”
“She got him into her bed. And that was that for his marriage.”
“Do I know this girlfriend of yours who lost her husband?”
“Sure you do. Janet Hislop on the next block.”
“Really? So her husband Stephen…”
“You mean her ex-husband Stephen…who sees his kids only on weekends now…is that what you want, Mark?”
“Of course not!” he shouted, for the first time showing some emotion in place of his standard calmness.
He told his wife about his discussion with his buddy Reggie, and how he had just begun trying to do what his friend had suggested, when Francine had collided with him on the sidewalk.
“And then I had to help her home, which was nearby. I’m a gentleman…what else was I to do?”
Julia nodded. “I get it. After all these years, honey, I know how you operate. You’re as loyal as the day is long.”
“I’m relieved to hear you say that.”
Mark stood up and looked her squarely in the face. “So what’s our plan?”
“Our plan is going to be to break her interest in you ASAP and transfer it on to some other unlucky fella!”
Mark nodded slowly. “I like it…I like it!… So just how do we do that?”
