STRATHROY – At the end of August, 30 children from across the area came together in Strathroy for five days filled with games, sports, crafts, music and new friendships.
Children ages five to 12 came from Strathroy, London, Komoka and Mount Brydges for the first summer camp organized in Canada by Renew Ministries.
The camp brought together both Ukrainian and Canadian children. While much of the program was in Ukrainian, language never seemed to be a barrier as the children played, created and took part in activities together.
Each day included a mix of sports, crafts, games and creative projects for different age groups. Children also had a chance to explore media, choosing songs and working together to create their own music videos.
This year’s program was built around Psalm 23, with activities throughout the week connected to the theme. But the camp was about more than the daily program. It took a large community effort to make the five days happen.
Sixteen team members worked directly with the children, while many others helped with meals, transportation, decorations, activities and supplies. Providence United Reformed Church provided the space for the camp, and people from Strathroy, London, Exeter and surrounding communities contributed their time and skills.
Volunteers also provided transportation for children whose parents were unable to bring them to Strathroy, making it possible for more families to participate.
Parents said their children came home excited about the experience, and many were already asking about next year.
“My child wanted to come back every day,” one parent said. “There was such a welcoming atmosphere. The children could just be themselves, try new things and have fun without feeling like they had to be the best at something. They felt accepted and included.”
Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Steve Pinsonneault also stopped by during the week to tour the camp, meet the children and talk with parents and volunteers. During his visit, he recognized the work being done to bring children and families together and contribute to the local community. He also noted the strong turnout for the camp’s first year and asked whether organizers hoped to make it an annual event.
The work with children will continue this fall, when Renew Ministries plans to launch a media school in London, giving children opportunities to learn acting and media production.
And judging by the response from families, there are already children hoping the summer camp will return next year.
