STRATHROY - On Tuesday, September 3rd, this reporter attended a roundtable discussion at Trout Haven Park in Strathroy, hosted by Aggie and George Armstrong, the park’s owners. The event was focused on the Private Members’ Bill C-410, introduced by MP Lianne Rood on June 19th, which aims to amend the Income Tax Act to recognize campgrounds as active businesses in Canada. The bill would allow campground owners to have certainty regarding their tax status and enable them to invest in their businesses with confidence.
Camping In Ontario (CIO), along with the Canadian Campground and RV Association (CCRVA), has been lobbying for this change for nearly a decade. MP Rood’s involvement, with her extensive knowledge of the industry, played a crucial role in making this proposed legislation possible. Both CIO and CCRVA expressed their gratitude to MP Rood and her team for prioritizing this issue, which they believe is essential for the future growth of campgrounds in the province.
During the event, MP Lianne Rood emphasized the importance of supporting small businesses like campgrounds, noting how vital they are to Ontario’s tourism industry. She acknowledged the efforts of the campground owners who travelled to participate in the discussion, expressing her appreciation for their entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to the industry.
George Armstrong, co-owner of Trout Haven Park, also shared information about upcoming events at the campground. The park hosts live music on long weekends, which is open to the public. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and beverages, with donations accepted to support the bands.
The campground remains open until October 31st and features two ponds, one for trout fishing, where visitors pay by the pound for their catch, and another for catch-and-release fishing, which requires a $5 entry fee.
