ILDERTON - Whether they’re new to skating, brushing up on their skills, or trying a different skill, adults are learning to skate through a program run by the Ilderton Skating Club.
“Skills are varied. We have some adults that are just learning, some that want to improve so they can skate with their children and ex-figure skaters that just want to skate for exercise and maybe continue with some testing,” says Alma Moir with the Ilderton Skating Club.
The program has been running for a 10-week session in the fall at Medway arena, and another session is planned for the winter and into March. Fifteen skaters were registered for the fall program. “We do have several that are also on our Adult Synchronized skating team that want to come out for more exercise and/or to work on skills that they need. It also is a very ‘social’ atmosphere,” says Moir. The program is offered to people aged 18 and older. “Hopefully they are more comfortable on the ice and on their way to achieving new skills.”
The Ilderton Skating Club offers a number of programs, which for many children and young people offer their first experience with skating. Moir says teaching adults to skate is different in the sense that they take a more analytical approach to the skills. “They want to know all the technique involved with the skills but do have more ‘fear’ than the younger skaters,” says Moir.
