STRATHROY - On February 22, Strathroy came together for a powerful cause as the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) fundraising event took place, benefiting the 37 Frank Youth Centre. The event, which drew nearly 200 participants, raised a total of $82,000, surpassing its fundraising goal and demonstrating incredible community support for local youth.
“Together, we are showing these youth that they matter. Your love, your support, and your actions speak louder than words, giving them hope and reminding them that they are never alone,” said Dave Berdan, who runs Youth for Christ, in his speech.
Located at 37 Frank St. in Strathroy, the Youth Centre is dedicated to helping young people, especially those at risk of homelessness, food insecurity, or simply in need of a safe space to call their own. The Centre provides vital resources such as food, toiletries, clothing, showers, and laundry, while also offering an emergency crash bed for those who have nowhere else to turn.
Josina Pranger, the Director of the Crash Bed Program at the Youth Centre, shared her perspective on the importance of such fundraising events: “We’re raising awareness about homelessness and housing insecurity here in Strathroy. The funds we raise go directly toward keeping the Centre and our Emergency Crash Bed running, helping youth in need.”
“I started volunteering here when I was in college, and after graduation, I helped establish the crash bed program,” said Josina. “Seeing kids come here who are struggling with everything from homelessness to mental health issues, and knowing they have a safe space to go, makes a huge difference. We’ve had youth say things like, ‘I was about to kill myself, but I came here instead.’ That’s why we do this.”
The event featured a two-kilometer walk through downtown Strathroy, where participants braved the cold to show solidarity with the youth who face such challenges every day.
Strathroy Mayor Colin Grantham also attended the event, recognizing the importance of such initiatives for the community. He shared, “I’d like to give Dave and his team a lot of credit for what they do because they are the inspiration behind this.”
The funds raised will continue to support the operations of the 37 Frank Youth Centre, ensuring it remains a vital resource for Strathroy’s youth.
