SPORTS - The final showdown between the top two teams of the West Yeck division commenced March 21, the Petrolia Flyers giving the Exeter Hawks a run for the money.
Petrolia won the first three games, 5-1, 2-1 and 4-3, pushing the Hawks against the boards in a do or die fourth game. That game was played out in Exeter to a record, 1,012 fans. No scoring in the first period but both teams tied 2-2 at the end of the second. Bowerman saved the day for Exeter with a power play shot with just over two minutes left, putting the home boys up 3-2 and still in the playoffs.
The fifth game was March 30 in Petrolia turf. The Hawks prevailed in the first two periods, scoring three goals in total while unanswered by the Flyers. In period three Petrolia came alive and scored twice. Exeter managed to keep them back and even scored with 5 seconds on the clock! Final score was 4-2 for Exeter.
Game six the teams headed back to Exeter. No scoring in the first two periods as 1,184 people looked on. But the Flyers would score, again, and again, ending the game with a 3-0 win for them and the division championship for the 2024-25 season.
Petrolia moves on to play the Essex 73’s from the West Stobbs Division. First game was in Essex territory where the home team won.
