STRATHROY-CARADOC – During its June 2 meeting, Council endorsed the continuation of its current three-station fire service model, rejecting a consultant’s recommendation to consolidate Stations 2 (Mt. Brydges) and 3 (Melbourne) into a single facility on Glendon Drive.
Interim Fire Chief Brad Bigrigg presented the update, referencing the 2021 Fire Station Location Study commissioned by the municipality. While acknowledging the study’s intent, Bigrigg said he could not support the proposed consolidation. “Our business relies entirely on time and distance, and the location of a single fire station at that location puts many of the residents, particularly on the Melbourne side, at a disadvantage,” he said. He also warned that moving the fire halls could impact the municipality’s tanker shuttle accreditation and lead to higher insurance premiums for some residents. “Some ratepayers who currently enjoy reduced premiums due to the location of the fire stations would see an increase,” he added.
Council discussion focused not only on confirming the municipality’s direction but also on the long-term future of the fire halls, particularly Station 3 in Melbourne, which is shared with Southwest Middlesex under a fire protection agreement. Councillor John Brennan suggested that formal discussions with Southwest Middlesex begin immediately regarding potential renovations or a new station. “We need to begin talking to them today about how we would finance a renovation or replacement… It needs to be truly a cooperative inter-municipal effort,” he said.
Councillor Frank Kennes and Councillor Brian Derbyshire raised concerns about flexibility in future site selection, suggesting that broader geographic considerations be factored in, not just municipal boundaries. Derbyshire proposed removing the phrase “settlement area” from the motion to allow greater flexibility in determining the eventual site locations. The amendment was accepted.
Deputy Mayor Mike McGuire moved to approve the three-part motion supporting the continuation of fire service in Mount Brydges and Melbourne, seconded by Councillor Sandi Hipple. The motion, as amended, passed unanimously.
