SPORTS - Summer is in full swing, but the call has already gone out for players to join the Ilderton Minor Hockey Association. “Preparations for the upcoming Ilderton Jets season are in full swing and we’re incredibly excited!” says Club President Andy Marshall.
Early registration ended on June 30th, and the club encourages people to act quickly. “Registration remains open after that, but spots do fill up quickly, especially in our younger age groups.” says Marshall.
This year the Ilderton Jets have made a special effort to recruit goalies, in part through posts on social media. Marshall says the Association is always looking to support and grow the goalie position in the league. “Goalies are such a crucial part of every team, and we want to ensure every age group is well-supported. Whether you’re a returning player thinking of trying out the position or brand new to the game, we welcome you!,” says Marshall.
As to what makes a good goalie, Marshall says there are a number of factors. “A good goalie is more than just quick reflexes — they’re calm under pressure, focused, and have a strong sense of positioning and anticipation. But most importantly, a good goalie has a growth mindset. It’s a position that requires practice and resilience, and we love seeing our young Jets goalies develop not only their technique but also their leadership skills on and off the ice.”
But whatever position appeals to potential Ilderton Jets, there are ways to stay in top form before the hockey season begin. “Summer is a great time to stay active and have fun while keeping hockey skills sharp. We recommend kids get outside and stay moving. For goalies, simple hand-eye drills, balance work, or participating in multi-sport activities can help build agility and coordination. And of course, local hockey camps and skills sessions are a great way to stay connected to the game. The key is to keep it fun and build excitement for the upcoming season with the Jets,” says Marshall.
