Seniors, this is our month! June is Seniors Month in Ontario, and the 2026 theme is “Ontario Seniors—Let’s Get Moving”. It’s all to celebrate and recognize the achievements of older adults “while promoting wellness, social engagement, and active living”. Let’s see how some municipalities are doing that.
Lucan Biddulph offers several programs and living arrangements tailored for seniors, including active recreation at the Lions Active Living Centre, affordable non-profit housing, and assisted living options.
North Middlesex seniors have access to community resources, including social clubs and day programs. Of course, Craigwiel Gardens offers adult day programs, assisted living, and long-term care. The municipality organizes the CraigActive social group and provides information on local Seniors Active Living Centres throughout Middlesex County.
Seniors in Adelaide Metcalfe can attend a Fraud Awareness for Seniors talk on Tuesday, June 25 at 2:00pm at the Fire Hall.
Middlesex Centre has “seniors-focused recreation and social programs at community centres in Bryanston, Coldstream, Delaware, Ilderton and Komoka”. Middlesex County is looking for a Senior Planner to oversee planning and the needs of seniors.
There are a variety of events, programs, and opportunities available in London during the month. The City hosts special monthly events (which include meals and entertainment) and fitness programs like Ageless Grace and Cardio Strength at community hubs like the Kiwanis Seniors’ Community Centre. You can register for these activities by calling 519-661-5575.
The London Public Library celebrates older adults throughout June with specialized resources, film screenings (such as Monday Matinees and Silver Screamers at the Central Branch), and clubs designed to promote creativity and connection.
Do you know about the Age Friendly London Network? Look for offerings which provide free educational and wellness workshops focused on resiliency, self-care, and building social connections.
Email for their newsletter at agefriendlyondon@london.ca, and find out about events such as the Senior’s Expo Thursday June 18, at the Cherry Hill Village Mall.
Those active within the community, “enjoy better health, are happier, and are less likely to experience social isolation,” according to the county’s website. As a Senior’s Fitness Instructor in training, this writer agrees.
Each time we meet for a one-hour session of cardio and strength training three times a week, one can’t fail to witness the social aspect therein as people converse with one another during warm-ups and as they leave. This month, become aware of seniors; what’s available to them, and negative attitudes that still exist toward them.
Here are some tips on how you can support seniors this month. Thank the seniors in your life for all their hard work and show them just how much they are appreciated. Send a “Thank You” message, either in person, over the phone, by mail, email, or on social media. Do you know seniors who are volunteering and helping in their neighbourhood? Tell your municipality about it! Share health and fitness tips for seniors. Post info about seniors’ events taking place during Seniors Month (via link to community centres/municipalities).
