STRATHROY – A commemorative Veterans Crosswalk is expected to be installed on James Street before Remembrance Day after Strathroy-Caradoc Council approved $3,000 in funding during its October 19 meeting.
The project, proposed by Royal Canadian Legion Sir Arthur Currie Branch 116, carries an estimated cost of $6,500, with $3,500 committed by local business Crystal Clear Bags Canada Inc.
Councillor Frank Kennes brought forward the funding motion, emphasizing the importance of recognizing those who have served in Canada’s Armed Forces.
“I think this is a really good cause,” Kennes said. “Considering what’s been going on this weekend in Alberta. I think it reemphasizes the importance of what various forces do and have done in our country.”
Mayor Colin Grantham seconded the motion, which subsequently passed.
According to Councillor Donna Pammer, the business contribution came from owners Robert and Trina Heubach, whose two sons currently serve in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Pammer said she approached the couple about supporting the initiative after they joined the local Legion branch earlier this year.
The project coincides with the Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary, adding significance to the planned installation.
When Mayor Grantham asked whether the crosswalk would be completed before November 11, Director of Community Services Rob Lilbourne confirmed the contractor’s readiness.
“I’ve been in contact with the company, and they’re prepared to have it installed prior to Remembrance Day,” Lilbourne told council.
