ILDERTON - The Ilderton Curling Club’s Owen Henry and Brooklyn Ideson did their country proud, coming home with a silver medal from the recent World Junior Mixed Doubles Curling Championship.
The team was edged out of a gold medal by the team from Japan, which scored two points in the eighth end of play. The final score was 6-5 for team Miura and Fujii. The final game was held May 10th in Edmonton.
“Our first world championship was something that we will remember forever. From putting the maple leaf on for the first time on Monday morning to the medal ceremony on Sunday afternoon, it was truly an awesome experience,” says Henry. We made new friends from all across the world and lived every moment to the fullest, coming home with nothing but great things to say about our week,” adds Henry.
The team had an outstanding tournament, going undefeated in their division, and finishing first in Group D. They outscored their opponents 64-12 in pool play.
“Like our play all week, the gold medal game was a testament to the hard work that we have put into the sport of curling. It was a great game by both teams where we were lucky to be in control most of the game. Unfortunately, a few untimely misses in the latter half of the game ended up costing us the gold medal. Nonetheless, we were proud of our play and how we represented Canada all week long,” says Henry.
The team represented Canada after winning the U-21 Mixed Doubles World Qualifier in Sudbury.
“As a team, this marks the end of our time together as Mixed Doubles partners. As I age out of juniors, I will be putting all my focus into men’s curling with Team King, hoping to set ourselves up for a deep run at the 2029 Canadian Olympic Trials,” says Henry.
