STRATHROY - Over the past almost three years, a vibrant and growing community has formed in Strathroy, bringing together Ukrainians and Canadians alike. The Strathroy Ukrainian Reformed Fellowship (SURF) has become a place of unity and cultural exchange, making a lasting impact on the local area. Through various events and initiatives, this community has not only strengthened bonds among families but also contributed significantly to the development of the broader Strathroy society.
Founded by a group of families who relocated to Strathroy due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the community has steadily grown, with members coming from across Strathroy, London, Mount Brydges, St. Thomas, Forest, Poplar Hill, and surrounding towns. The SURF community is not exclusive to Ukrainians, as it warmly welcomes Canadians to participate in its events, fostering an inclusive environment for all.
Since its inception, the community has organized numerous activities aimed at bringing people together. Recreational events, such as volleyball games, have been a highlight. All gatherings are open to everyone, offering both Ukrainians, Canadians, and people of all nationalities an opportunity to bond over friendly competition. As the fellowship expands, so does its impact. The community hosts regular meetings, including board game nights on Friday evenings and worship services on Sunday nights.
Children’s programs and workshops are another key feature of SURF’s activities, with large events often drawing up to 60 participants. The programs offer lots of fun, activities, games, and more. These initiatives are designed to serve both Ukrainian and Canadian children, promoting cross-cultural understanding and learning. The community is committed to building a strong foundation for future generations, ensuring that the values of kindness, friendship, and mutual respect are passed down.
The Strathroy Ukrainian Reformed Fellowship has proven to be more than just a place for Ukrainians to find solace in a new country. It has become a thriving community that bridges cultures, fosters new friendships, and contributes positively to the social fabric of Strathroy. As it continues to grow, the community is making an undeniable impact, one event at a time.
