SPORTS - Soccer has begun for the kids in the Lucan area. Games started May 12 and will go until July 20-21 for a U9-U12 festival and August 17-18 for the District Cup. Some 550 registrants signed up this year, which is increased from last year. Lucan Soccer offers tier 3—or house league—for all levels, and tier 2 (competitive) at ages where the numbers and interest allow.
Homes games for U9-U12 are played at the Lucan fields located behind the arena. A new full-sized field is available for use this season on Fallon Drive, along with three smaller fields at the arena. The arena location no longer has a full-size field. Once the new facility is fully usable, the association will be able to have 3 more full size fields. According to sources, weather played a large role in delaying the pitches’ readiness.
The U13-18 teams will play at the new Lucan Soccer Complex. Some teams travel as far as Woodstock and Tillsonburg, Chatham and Sarnia, and Goderich.
“Soccer offers physical, mental and social benefits, making it an excellent choice for kids to play and enjoy,” said Yvonne Hundey, association president, “while also being an affordable activity for parents.”
In most cases there are 4 adults but may be a minimum of 2. There are generally two coaches per team.
“We are so fortunate in Lucan to have so many people step forward to volunteer,” Hundey enthused. “Without all the volunteers we would not be able to run the current program. Last year we had a growing season with expanding into some competitive teams along with our house league division. We are expanding with even more teams this year and we are looking forward to getting out on the pitch!”
Jerseys, shorts and socks are provided by the Local Tim Horton’s.Game days are Friday nights, Saturday and Sunday mornings. Take a look, Lucan soccer will provide an hour’s entertainment.
